The Sheffield Dojo was founded about 20 years ago and we practise two disciplines - Iaido and Jodo.
IAIDO is a traditional martial art that develops skills with a Japanese samurai sword. The art involves the practice of formal kata or preset forms using a blunt or sharp katana. Practice involves learning how to draw the sword, cut and handle the sword in various ways, shake off any imaginary blood and re-sheath the sword in a pre-set way.
JODO was originally developed in the early 1600's as a method to combat a swordsman by using a 4 foot wooden staff. It is practised between two people, one with a wooden sword and one with a staff in a pre-set way.
Doshinkenyukai Sheffield is a member of the British Kendo Association, which is responsible for the martial arts related to traditional Japanese swordsmanship in the UK including Iaido and Jodo.
We practise Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido in our classes, an old school derived from the Eishin Ryu which is at least 400 years old.
